PSL and FUZ to come up with a standard football player’s contract

The Premier Soccer League and Footballers Union of Zimbabwe have agreed to come up with a standard football player’s contract that is meant to create favourable working conditions between football players and clubs.

This comes following an increase in reports of disputes involving football players and clubs over the years.

Of late, Lawrence Mhlanga has been involved in an ownership wrangle with Chicken Inn FC and FC Platinum that that has seen the defender missing out on the PSL action during the 2017 season.

Premier Soccer League Chief Executive Officer, Kennedy Ndebele said they were worried about the increase in player contract disputes that were affecting the careers of players.

He highlighted that following a board of governor’s resolution, the League was working with the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe to come up with a standard player’s contract.

“We are crafting a player contract that will be used by all PSL Clubs. This is meant to create good working relations between clubs and players, to protect the investment of clubs on players and to improve professionalism in football,” he said.

Ndebele added that the two parties will then engage Zimbabwe Football Association for the adoption of the player contract.

FUZ President Desmond Maringwa applauded the initiative by the PSL saying they had already started working on the contract which should be finalised within a month.

Maringwa said the contract would go a long way in safeguarding the interest and welfare of players.

“A standard player contract is good for football as it makes it easy to deal with players’ disputes.

“We had issues before where a contract does not specify the actual player’s conditions and such contracts are difficult to deal with especially when disagreements arise between the player and the club,” he said.

He added that FUZ had been moving around the country conscientising clubs in the PSL and Division One of the standard player contract and the need for a code of conduct for players.
